Garbage dumping on No. 8 ends
Garbage dumping on No. 8, begun in 1927, ended in December 1962 (Shōwa 37).
The ward history "Kōtō-ku no Ayumi" records: "Filling with refuse began in Shōwa 2. Filling with refuse ended in December of [Shōwa] 37." The Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Environment gives No. 8 (Shiomi, Kōtō-ku) an area of 364,000 m², about 3.71 million tonnes of buried garbage, and a period of fiscal Shōwa 2–37 (FY1927–FY1962).
As No. 8 neared completion, garbage also began to be taken to No. 14 (Yumenoshima) from 1957. In the same month, December 1962, Kōtō-ku's fishery cooperatives gave up their fishing rights.
