Open burning of garbage on No. 8 ends
After repeated complaints about smoke and dust, open burning of garbage stopped from the Shōwa 30s (1955).
According to the Tokyo Metropolitan Bureau of Environment, open burning "stopped from the Shōwa 30s (1955) because of repeated complaints about smoke and dust, and raw garbage and the like came to be buried as it was". The Port and Harbor Bureau's survey records that, until it was stopped at the request of nearby residents, burning took place mainly on the east side, and that as a result land use began immediately after filling ended on the east side, where the ground was comparatively stable.
Wikipedia's article on Yumenoshima gives the period of dumping on No. 8 as 1927–1955, but the source it cites, the Bureau of Environment's 2024 pamphlet, says that dumping continued until 1962. 1955 is when open burning ended, not the year dumping ended.
