Susaki Benten shrine is founded
The Susaki Benten shrine (later Susaki Shrine) was founded on the Edo seashore at Susaki. The future Shiomi was the sea off this shore.
In 1700 the Susaki Benten shrine (洲崎弁天社) was founded at Susaki in Fukagawa; in the Meiji period it was renamed Susaki Shrine (洲崎神社). In the Edo period Susaki was a scenic spot looking out over the sea, known for shellfish gathering at low tide (潮干狩り).
The place that later became Shiomi was the sea off Susaki. The 1924 reclamation licence order describes the site to be reclaimed as "the sea surface off Susaki-Benten-chō, Fukagawa Ward, Tokyo City" (東京市深川区洲崎弁天町地先海面).
